Ms. Krampf is a General Music teacher at Cold Spring Elementary, South and Hedge Elementary in Plymouth, MA. Plymouth Public Schools offer 1 hour of general music instruction for all 1st - 5th grade students and full day Kindergarten. Through instruction, students will be held to the following standards:

  • Demonstrate behavior and work ethic conducive to learning and participating  in musical tasks and performances

  • Demonstrate differences in pitch

  • Read basic music symbols and demonstrate steady beat/simple rhythmic patterns

  • Demonstrate knowledge of music vocabulary and expressions through listening and performing tasks

This Scope & Sequence details what students ought to know and be able to do by the end of the year for each grade. The ultimate goal of general music education is to connect with students and show them the importance of music in everyday life. My hope is that students will continue to study music, play an instrument and/or sing once they enter middle school.

Music Immersion Program (MIP) is a unique collaboration between Plymouth Public School administrators, teachers, their supporters and the Plymouth Philharmonic. This program engages 3rd, 4th and 5th graders who hear Phil ensembles in their school over the course of the year. The program culminates in the spring when over 2000 area school children attend a live, daytime performance of the Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra at Memorial Hall.

Music is an aural art form. The development of good listening skills is crucial to the development of musicianship. However, good listening skills are essential for a child to be successful in any subject area. During morning announcements, a selection of music will be played over the school intercom two days a week. A brief script will be read about the composer and some of the musical features. The students will listen to the music to learn musical concepts such as tempo, instrumentation and dynamics. But most importantly, this will greatly enhance the quality of life and learning in school.

When art subjects integrate with academic subjects, not only does this form of teaching help differentiate instruction, but it also builds the school community. By piloting and creating an “Arts Integration Project” and “Music Reading Incentive” with academic teachers, both the music national standards and academic subject standards are being taught and students are able to connect knowledge between each classroom.
